Potential valve designs are first tested by computer simulation using a computational fluid dynamics program which plots arrows to display local fluid velocity. Promising valve designs will have more rotational and convergent flow patterns in reverse flow through the valve than in forward flow. Maximizing these differences in flow characteristics results in more efficient valves.
